Free Defrag Software, Best Defrag Freeware, How To Defrag Computer

Find the best free defrag software and defrag programs here!

Learn how to defrag computer systems - and how to defrag hard drive disks - using free defrag utility software.

When new files are added onto your hard disk, the file data is stored in small pieces across your entire hard disk. The data is put wherever the disk's head happens to be, and also wherever there is space on the disk. The data is not stored in a neat, logical order.

It's a bit like disbanding with the order of your wardrobe and, instead, storing your clothes wherever there is space in your house. There could be one shoe in a kitchen cupboard while another is stored alongside your DVDs!

In computer language this is known as "fragmentation", and it slows your PC down.

Imagine how much longer it would take to get dressed if your clothes were stored randomly through-out your house! It's much better to have things stored logically.

So you need to reverse fragmentation, by de-fragging. Defragging is like putting your clothes into a wardrobe and your DVDs onto a shelf. The data on your hard disk is re-organised into a logical order so that files can be found more quickly and therefore programs will run faster.

A free defrag program is included with Microsoft Windows. But it is slow and lacks features. So I recommend you check out Defraggler.

Made by the same people behind C Cleaner (an excellent PC maintenance tool), Defraggler is a lightweight, fast and very effective free defrag utility. Benefits include:
Super-charge defragging your computer by carrying out a "Quick defrag" which targets only files that are fragmented (as opposed to rearranging the contents of the entire disk, including files that were not fragmented).Defrag specific files or folders.Apply defragging conditions, such as "Only defrag files bigger than 500kb".Scheduler automatic defragging.
